The baseball team opened their 2005 campaign on Tuesday afternoon against SUNY-Old Westbury on Long Island.
The date was initially scheduled for a non-conference doubleheader, but due to the heavy overnight rain, the two schools decided to play one game.
Baruch took the advantage early with a 3-1 lead through the first three innings. Ray Mowatt scored the first in the opening inning on an RBI single by Adam Hoyle. They added two more in the third on a solo home run by Paul Alfano and a fielder's choice by Wayde Anderson.
SUNY-Old Westbury (3-9) took the lead with a fourth inning rally on a bases loaded double to go ahead 7-3.
Baruch (0-1) got one back on another run scored by Mowatt in the top of the sixth. Mowatt singled, stole his second base of the game to get to second, and came home later on a wild throw.
Old Westbury put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the eventual 11-4 final score.
The Bearcats, playing in their first game after a series of postponements, demonstrated plenty of positive moments, such as loading the bases three times and getting a runner on base during each inning.
The combination of Alberto Nieves and Cesar Chaves also put together two double-plays.
Tristan Cetto struck out the side in the fifth inning, while left-handed freshman pitcher and Ticker sportswriter Johnathon Perozo provided a very strong pitching start to his college debut.
Baruch will return to action with their first conference doubleheader this Saturday afternoon against D'Youville of Buffalo. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Stevens Tech baseball field in Hoboken, New Jersey.
